Art as Portal to the Unseen World

All art is landscape painting. Let me explain. Rick Rubin see the creative process of art as a "portal to the unseen world." Abstract expressionism uses marks, color and shapes to explore the inner world (landscape) of the artist in situ or life context. Realism and representational painting use more familiar forms to explore the same inner and unseen "landscape" and larger issues of life. In "Spirit Window" (Acrylic on cradled panel, 24x24x2) I am using the dance of life and light to suggest the wonders and mysteries of nature itself are windows into to spiritual mysteries of life itself. The massive arches near Moab AZ frame the landscape beyond in millions of years of wind and water shaped stone. They inspire me to look beyond the geology and into the very soul of the world around us.
