I have recently shifted to more work in acrylic paints. Working in acrylics enables me to add depth in layers to my abstracts, abstract landscapes and impressionistic landscapes. Acrylics are more suited to my larger scale work and wall art montage pieces. I still do plein air style, impressionistic painting in oils using both brush and pallet knife to make the light dance on the subject matter.
Trout Stream - I started this abstract landscape with water in mind but the trout just showed up so I added a fly on the water to please a fisherman! I have seen many holes like this beauty stalking trout in Colorado on the South Platte. If I could just get them to rise! Acrylic on panel, 16x16x2.5, painted black on sides and ready to hang or frame.
SOLD La Bajada Dawn: A view of La Bajada mesa in morning light caught on my way to Tent Rocks, near Cochiti Pueblo. It was a cool winter morning and first rays of light brought warmth to the valley. I did a study first to work out the values. The hard part was getting the grass in the shadows to feel cool but still connect to warm grass in the sunlight! 12x9x1.5 Oil on Panel, Black sides, ready to hang or frame.
Nambe Winter: This is from a photo and earlier study, capturing the rays of light defining a large snowfall on the cliffs near Nambe, NM. The shadows on the snow, sky and distant hills all blended together, beautiful but hard to capture. I like how it turned out and the feeling of the light really comes though the textured surface when you see the actual painting! 12X16x1.5 Oil on Panel, Black Sides sides, ready to hang or frame.
Abiquiu Glory - The picture does not come close to capturing this gem of a little painting. It is done in almost all transparent layers over a gold and iridescent white under painting. It shines in the most dim of lighting just like the sunsets in New Mexico. Acrylic on 12x9x1.5 panel, painted black on the sides and ready to hang.
Glowing Clouds - SOLD Inspirited by clouds over the Sangre's to the east being lit up by the setting sun in the west. Really spectacular. I tried to capture it using transparent paints over a glowing gold underpainting. It shines even in dim light. Acrylic on panel. 16x16x1.5 painted black on sides, ready to hang or frame.
